Making a complaint about a hospital

Hi
Recently went for treatment in a private hospital (a very very well known one) but have to say the treatment was a disgrace and I'm wondering what the best way is to make a complaint? Is it best to complain directly to the hospital, the consultant or - a this was covered by my health insurance - to my health insurer? Then again, am I just wasting my time???

If it is a complaint about the nature of your medical treatment (misdiagnosis, incorrect treatment etc...) then complain to the medical council.

If it is a complaint about a service provided in the clinic seperately to your medical treatment (such as meals, room etc) complain to the clinic themselves.

Write to the Insurer (Director of Claims/head of claims), CEO of hospital and also write to HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority).

Hi Peter

Your original post is ok. But this post strays into discussing medical issues which is not allowed.

You were not happy with the quality of medical care. That is enough for people to advise you.

Theres usually a patient representative in every hospital. or a designated Complaints Officer.

Make sure you send you complaint by registered post. Those one's don't get lost.

If you aren't happy with your experience I would applaud you registering a complaint. Years ago I complained about a bill from a Gyne & guess what the bill was halved. Although I was covered by my medical insurance I didn't think the treatment I received merited him getting paid the full amount. I think sometimes doctors/hospitals charge what they think they can get away with especially if an insurer is involved. Best of luck!
It would be very interesting to know the outcome - if any.

Hi Peter,

I am also looking to make a complaint about a well known private hospital. I firstly complained by sending an email to the CEO. I later received a call from the customer care manager. He has tried to help, but the hospital are completely incompetent, and are not capable of resolving my issues.

I am looking to take my complaint further, and just wondered if you, or anyone else knows how to go about it?
