Magic mushrooms?

I bought a jar of mixed mushrooms (from Lithuania) in my local Eastern European Foodmarket. They were preserved in some kind of oil - not sure what as all the ingredients are only listed in Lithuanian on the jar. However, I drained them using a stainless steel colander which was left unwashed overnight.

Now I find that the colander has big brown stains as if the steel has been eroded and I can't remove the stains. I am wondering if there was also some kind of acid in with the mushrooms, and if it could erode stainless steel what could it do to my insides??

I didn't even like them (they had a very strange taste - kind of as if they had gone off) and threw most of them out.

Eroded?! Do you actually mean corroded? Or are you sure you know what precisely happened to your colander? Why do you think that it was acid?

Yes I guess I meant to say corroded i.e. it's now brown where there was steel before.

I can only think that some kind of acid would have caused this, I've had this colander for years and it's never changed colour before.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is that if this had happened with mushrooms i'd bought from the likes of Tesco or Dunnes, I would go back and show them what happened. But because I'm not sure what the ingredients in this jar are (and maybe there is something on it saying "do not allow contact with stainless steel"), and because the girl in the foodmarket doesn't speak english, I am unsure about complaining to her.

my chemistry is a tad rusty, but i would hazard a guess that there is some sort of oxidation process after happening, which is probably quite harmless......google it and you may get an answer...

do you drink cola? did you ever see what that does to dirty coins?.....

sometimes a dishwasher can cause those stains

A lot of antipasti are soaked in a brine or vinegar mixture before being stored in the oil. Perhaps one of these could have caused the stains

And don't forget that stainless steel is not actually stainless!

The name originates from the fact that stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel.
