Hi there,

At the end of July 2009 I was made redundant from my job where I had worked for over 2 years. I was pregnant and in my third trimester at the time, so I took my maternity benefit (government only, no input from the company) for six months. However, it has just expired this week. I am now hoping to try and look for a new job, although given that my job is linked to the construction industry it will probably be quite difficult in this climate!

My question is as am I entitled to claim any form of social welfare as I am now unemployed and the MB has expired? If so, what do I apply for? Also, I am not married but I live with my partner so will it be means tested based on his salary?

I would really appreciate any advice that you could give me as I'm a bit lost when it comes to all this stuff.

You should apply for JB based on your 2008 contributions (se the keypost guide for unemployed). There will be no means test.

Thanks so much for your reply Welfarite - its greatly appreciated.

I have just downloaded the forms to apply for JB. Can I just ask if it is not means tested and my partners wages do not count, why then do I have to include his PPS no. and salary details on the form? It's all very confusing! Just seems strange that I have to give his details if it is not means tested? Does anyone know why this is?

Its a generic form that is used for JA claims also; it will be referred to if you exhaust your JB entitlement and have to apply for JA.
