Macbook pro freezing

I have this laptop about a year and have been so happy (and sometimes smug) about my switch from windows.
I haven't installed anything new lately, other than the normal automatic updates.
However when scrolling up and down pages and switching between tabs and spaces it just freezes................... It's really doing my head in, any advice ???

If nothing there works, then restart your MacBook Pro holding down the shift key (safe boot mode). Login and restart again, emptying the system trash can when you do.

If you still have problems, start up from the system CD and run the Disk Utility application in First Aid mode, clicking on the Repair Disk Permissions button (do this before running any system updates).

If all else fails, back up your data and reinstall the operating system from the CD, then download and apply all updates using software update.
