M50 Northbound - speed cameras

I'm aware that they are putting in new speed cameras on the M50 North - one before Ballinteer exit and one after Ballymun exit. My question is, will these cameras be simply speed cameras that catch you as you go through the lines on the road at those points, or is there speed differential capability in them ? For example, I have heard rumours that they will be able to nab you if your AVERAGE speed between the two points is over 100kph. If that's the case, it's a brave new world out there..

I have noticed that they have already put the lines in place at Ballymun which seems to indicate that it will be the same type camera as before which merely calculates your speed as you cross the lines. If it was the newer type there should have been 2 sets of lines a set distance apart and 2 cameras.

Hi Petermack. Yes, but there is a second speed trap further south at Ballinteer exit. I think they are going to try and trap you if your average speed is over 100kph between the two speed traps

If they're catching speeders on an averaging basis, are the series of lines which have been put in place needed?

When the "average speed" cameras were installed on the old road from Dundalk to Newry, I don't recall any road markings, just the large yellow camera installations over the road itself.

yeah you wouldn't need the 'normal' series of lines if you're doing an average speed. it would probably also need legislative change i would imagine.

I think you are giving them too much credit. There is no connection between these camera's as per the 'vulture' cams in the north.
Beside most journeys on the M50 are shorter and would not entail passing both these points on a journey. If this were the intention they would be much closer together to have a decent throughput of applicable cars.

My God, I never knew that that's what those yellow cameras were till now !

Those averaging speed cameras are very effective.

In Australia they have them between Sydney and Brisbane, a journey of approx 1,000km... and it takes into account breaks that must be taken by professional drivers every few hours.. so it's very hard to cheat them.
