LPT and ROS

I got a notification to pay LPT via ROS. I have not received any paper form.

[saga involving not being able to log in due to their implementation of Java - long story short, if you have a Mac these days ROS only works with Firefox and the most recent Java.]

The notification in my ROS inbox said I will owe 202 Jul-Dec 2013.
I checked the "heatmap" which indicates our house worth 150-200k. I crosschecked prices using the excellent keypost on this forum and figured that was about right. So I attempted to register/set up to pay.

It wants a PIN number that I don't have. Then I got into a website loop where it kept warning me I wasn't the registered person even though it's my notice and I'm securely logged in to ROS (!) so I would not be able to change any details. I thought, that's ok, I agree with their valuation, so I don't want to change anything. But then it told me the amount I would be paying was 157 euros not 202 so I panicked and gave up.

Has anyone managed to pay using ROS? I see warnings here of a transaction fee for online payment - does that also apply to ROS?

I have requested them to send me a paper form since the ROS version seems a bit "beta" at the moment...

I also have received an e-mail telling me to log into ROS and pay the LPT. Unfortunately, my main laptop is out of commission for the last fortnight, so I can't log in yet. Meanwhile, I went and paid the LPT using the separate online LPT site, which allows you to pay with just your PPSN, and without any pin number.

I can only imagine the technical horrors awaiting me when I log into ROS and it doesn't know I've already paid.

I finally found the PIN number - great graphic design guys, that was really obvious (not)... I tried again after figuring out their notice has banded our house in 200-250k not 150-200k. We're in a rural area with few transactions. So I thought ok for a quiet life go with the flow and pay the 202. Nope.

First of all the ROS implementation keeps timing you out/logging you out despite the complexity of the calculation and information needed (their idea of a PIN number...8 numbers and letters...). Then for some reason even though I've used ROS to pay Revenue for years, it wants all my bank details AGAIN. Avoid. I gave up for a third time. I pity the average punter fighting with this stuff...

I tried ROS years ago, when it first launched, and gave up in bafflement when it kept telling me I was non-PAYE (I've never been anything else but PAYE). Rang and wrote to Revenue trying to get it sorted out, and the best their 'technical support' could manage was to tell me to try again later, hopefully it would come right...

I've not been tempted to repeat the experiment. I know (or rather, I hear people insisting) that they've become much more efficient in recent years, but every single year I have to ring up and get them to manually restore my correct credits and allowances — which haven't changed in four years.

If they can't manage a simple PAYE taxpayer who's been with the same employer for 20 years, I shudder to think what they will make of the LPT.

I had a similar situation with PAYE Anytime- tried to use it for several years, kept telling me something like I had an "income tax registration" (can't remember exact words). It eventually turned out that some CGT that I had paid back in 2002 had resulted in me being set up as self-assessed, even though Revenue themselves never seemed to realise it or be able to tell me about it over the phone. Eventually I sorted out access to ROS and have been doing self-assessment tax returns ever since, even though I was 100% PAYE except for one or two occasions.

Well, surprise, surprise. I got logged into ROS and Revenue have successfully matched me up with the LPT that I paid online earlier. I have a shiny new property ID as well. So, no further action required.

I’m a ROS user and also got the property tax email from Revenue. Logged on using my digtial cert and clicked the LPT option on My Services. I didn’t need any PIN number or Property ID - I presume they regard the ROS cert as secure. Yes, had to supply my bank details as I wanted to use the Single Debit Authority, but this suited me as I wanted to use a different account to my normal ROS one. Agree havin a choice to use an existing account would be nice though. Anyway, took me a couple minutes to complete everything and the application behaved itself. Got an acknowledgement number at the end so hopefully all is sorted for this year. Just waiting now for Revenue to lift the money out of my bank account. Any chance they might forget!!

I also got my LPT notification via ROS because I was self assessed a few years ago due to a small amount of non PAYE income. Anyway once I logged in using my ROS digital cert and password I experienced no difficulties in accessing the online notification "letter" which included the property ID and PIN. I then went to the LPT online site and had no difficulty accessing the Revenue estimate of my liability, filing a return and payment details etc. Maybe experienced problems that I did not encounter but it seemed straightforward enough to me.
