Lowering Ceiling Height - Is it Possible?

Hi everyone,

Hoping some builder-types can help me out with this query. I've just had an offer accepted on an old two story, mid-terrace, red-brick house in Dublin. The house is in need of complete refurbishment & extension.

I'd like to add as much value as possible to the house and the upstairs has quite high ceilings. I was wondering if it would be possible (or advisable) to lower the ceilings upstairs and create another room in the attic space? Maybe the cost of doing this would negate the extra value, but I was just wondering if it can be done?

Thanks,
Pia

Yep. A friend recently did the very same. They got an architect to design and manage the project. I've no idea of costs.

something like that would depend on a million different
factors, you'll have to get an engineer to look at it first
of all, before and builder/architect as they won't be
able to advise you 100% what to do and if you could
even do it at all.

Second Kiwijbob's post: an engineer should be the first port of call regarding the necessary work.
