Lost Property - Taxis

I left a pair of specs in a taxi in the last couple of weeks. I now find that the carriage office no longer deals with lost property. The Garda web-site says that one should contact any garda station and they can check in Pulse.

I contacted two different Garda Stations. Both Gardai said they would check and came back and said nothing had been handed in.

Now, I am no statistician but I find it hard to believe that no pair of glasses have been handed in over the last few weeks in Dublin!

When I pointed this out to the first Garda she narrowed the search by date and make and came back with nothing after a longer delay. When I suggested the taxi driver might not have handed the specs in straight away she said they were under a duty to do so! I obviously didn't deserve to recover the specs if the taxi driver did not live up to his duties! When I suggested the specs might have been logged by colour rather than make as the make was not obvious she got annoyed.

She said she had checked stations 'a', 'b' and 'c'. She then said she would check station 'y' and came back to say there was nothing on the system for that station either. I pointed out to her that she should have checked the stations accepting property from taxis, i.e. Tallaght and Shankill. She replied snippily that she had checked them all.

Realising she just wanted me off the phone, I asked her where I should write to if I wanted to make a formal check for lost property. She said if I thought that property had not been handed in I should write to the Taxi Regulator. Thinking that was pretty pointless without the actual Taxi plate number I said I would pass and just wanted to know where to write with a view to recovering the property. She would not answer. I asked could I write to any Garda Station. Again she would avoided the question.

Similarly, the other Garda said he supposed I could write in somewhere if I wanted. However, he did not know where I should write and he clearly thought there was no point to it. I expect he thought dealing with the letter would be a waste of calories.

Maybe my specs were not handed in but surely some specs had been handed in. I simply do not believe that property is being properly logged or that the Gardai I spoke to bother carrying out proper checks. They did not have specific information they would log about property, e.g. colour, materials they were made form etc. They were also very quick to confirm they had nothing when they could not possibly have checked.

To be honest, I got the feeling that the people I spoke to were lying. Has anybody else come across this? Any Gardai out there who can clarify how lost property is logged, stored? Does it ever go walkabout?

See attached, did you contact any of these stations?

Why not try calling wefoundit? I'm not sure if they cover taxis but they contacted me two weeks ago after I lost my wallet in a club. They charge a EUR 5 if they find your item but its probably cheaper than a new pair of specs! Website is wefoundit DOT ie
