All,

I am struggling to find my national insurance number. I worked in the UK in the late 90's early 2,000's. I followed the steps in the key post above but my number was not retrievable on the online tool. I wrote to HMRC following the instructions given on the 11th of December with the copy of 2 forms of my ID etc but have not yet received a response. I sent the letter by registered post. Im at a loss now as to what to do. Given Im based in Ireland, are HMRC required to reply to me. It says on their website that they will respond in 10 working days and its now over a month?

Any suggestions would be great.

I received my NI number (in early 2024) after a similar process to the one you've undertaken. It took between 4 and 6 weeks. I can't remember exactly.
Don't lose heart yet.

I posted an NI request form out on 07 May 2024 and received a response by post in the week of 17 June 2024. So about six weeks. I hadn't registered the letter, and was starting to wonder if it had been lost.

I'm in the same boat. Sent my stuff just before Christmas, gonna call tomorrow to try and confirm receipt

Thanks for all your responses. Fibbernacci let me know how you get on with them on the phone.

I rang them and they found my NI in their system based on my address while living there and then they cross checked the details to their other system for security based on the company I worked for. Then they posted the number to me in about 3 weeks. So why don’t you try calling them to see if they can find you in the system.

I rang on Thursday. They said they got my letter, it's been processed and it just takes a couple of weeks for it to arrive here.

The guy I spoke to also said I didn't qualify as not enough NI contributions but I've heard work in an EEA country may count so I'm gonna try anyway.

How long did it take you to get through on the phone? I sent a letter before Christmas requesting my NI number but have also heard nothing. I tried to phone at the time but was so long waiting that I gave up.

I read the time to call them was on Thursday mornings. I took a half day fearing it would be a 2hr wait. When I rang in (9:30am) it said waiting 25 mins and it was pretty much that. Spoke to a nice geordie fella who was able to look at my record and tell me I didn't have the 3 years of proper NI contributions but then said if I feel there is entitlement I can put in form CF38 on the website once I get my NI number in the post.

I'll give it a shot. Some folks are suggesting that NI contributions in another country count towards getting you Class 3s. I'm gonna put together a load of payslips and tax cerificates etc to prove that.

I got a letter las week from the UK that was dated 2nd January. I think there's a back log somewhere in the system.

Good news! I finally got my NI number in the post yesterday. I posted the form before Christmas. It took about 6 weeks so was beginning to loose hope that it would ever arrive.

I just got logged into Hmrc there after sending off my online form last night. I hadn't checked my NI record till now and there was a button for 'Payable Gaps' bringing me to this (attached)

Does this mean I'm good?

That looks very hopeful. Do you qualify for class 2 or 3. How many years in total did you live in the UK?
