Looking to move from Construction to IT industry

Hi
My husband has over 12 years work as a Project Manager in the construction industry. As his job is now coming to an end and no thing in sight,he wants to change careers as there are no longer jobs in the construction sector. He has done some research and is considering a role as a Project Manger in the IT sector although he has little experience in this area but has very good project mangement skills
Can anyone offer me advice as to how he could get experience in this area? He is willing to work for nothing to gain experience.

Very few IT projects require a full time project manager these days, it's usually a part time job carried out by either a technical person who is contributing to the technical solution or a person with a deep knowledge of the business side, who is contributing to the business solution.

You'd normally expect someone going for such a position to have about 10 years experience, so to get a look in, your husband would need to bring something special to the table... does he at least have an honors (2.1) degree in an engineering or business related topic?
 
Thanks a mill for getting back to me Jim2007, he has a 2.1 degree in Construction Management & Engineering over ten years PM experience in this field, would you be able to recommend any companies that he could possibly e-mail to request work experience so as to gain some insight into IT whilst he is unemployed.

I have worked in IT for 8 years now, but only 6 months of them have been in Ireland - if you were based in London, there would be call for technical project managers for office moves etc. But I'm not too sure how many office moves go on around Dublin.

Try companies like Accenture who provide outsourcing, they probably employ full time PM's for their customer's projects, although I don't know for definite, but worth a shot
 
How about a full time conversions programme into IT.

Government have just announced a scheme whereby graduates can take on these post graduate qualifications full time and have their fee effectively waived.
