I would like to set up a text service for the parents association in our local primary school to contact them as a group re PA events. Can anyone advise me as to how I go about doing this and what are the costs involved. There would be approx 160 mobile numbers and we would be contacting them approx once a month.

Do I need to buy a phone or do any of the operators have an online account that I could sign up to for texts only, without having to purchase a phone?

Any guidance appreciated.

I have 02 and I can send 250 free texts through the internet each month.

It's easy to set up groups and to add people to them. I am not sure if there is a limit on the size of the group.

That would be a very handy way to do it.

have a look at tacutext

http://www.tacutext.ie/

It removes a lot of the overhead of maintaining numbers particularly when people lose phones/change numbers. They subscribe themselves to the service so that saves you having to get permission from everyone. There is no limit to the number texts as there are with the Operators web-based ones.

The only downside is that the recipient is charged 20c for each text; it's not a big deal if you are only sending out 1 or 2 per month though.

I think the O2 online service is only free when you text 1 number at a time...when you send group texts you get charged for the texts greater than 1...I could be wrong

You could try http://www.teamer.net/

Its for sports team management using text/email but I dont see why it couldnt be used for any group management.

I've never used the site, just read about it on here before//
