Hi,

Has anybody got a small wall safe installed at home?

Something like the small ones you see in hotel wardrobes would do to keep passports, wallet, camera etc safe when we are out.

They had on sale in Aldi from 10th March - was in there at the weekend getting plants and they still had quite a few on sale.

They have holes to bolt them to the floor or wall.

Hello,

Woodies also have a range of safes which could be used, again by bolting them to a solid wall.
See here, for example: http://www.woodiesdiy.com/Product/ROK-Medium-Electronic-Safe/13342/3.15.1

I had one put in a while back, got a good DIY guy (infact, he's my uncle to be entirely honest) to do it for me and it's worked perfectly ever since.

If your on the Northside of Dublin and want his contact details, drop me a private message and I can put you in contact.

Regards

Mr. Earl.

thanks. I'll have a look at Aldi, Argos and Woodies. I can bolt them myself to a solid wall. I wonder if a pro-burglar would open these anyway, I have no idea.

We were thinking the same thing! Thought about buying one, but think that if thieves came into the house they would use force to remove the safe from the wall or floor if it was just bolted on. Would probably be better to have one built-in to the wall or floor to be sure.

If they can remove ATM's there's not much chance for a small safe with 2 bolts.

Hi,

I think a pro can ultimately break into anything, given the right equipment and time. Hence, we live in a society where the best we can do, is try to deter them .... in the hopes that the delays caused and equipment needed, might send the burglar on their way - even, if only to a softer target.

Ultimately, I see our safe as little more then the above, a deterant. We've a house alarm and a dog (who lives in the house and has big teeth) to help fend away the burglars also...

We can but try my friend ;)

Regards

Mr. Earl.

Get one of these safes but keep your valuables in the shoebox beside it.

If you are securing any safe to a wall whether its a gun safe or an ordinary one, position it in the left hand corner of the room, preferably to a solid wall and floor, this location makes it much more difficult for the thief to jimmy it off the wall.

I have to say I think a well hidden location is much more likely to be effective than a wall safe. And cheaper.

I'd have to agree to this - we have our passports and other important documents in a metal box (in case of fire) hidden in a place where thieves wouldn't think of looking.

Although I understand that more burglaries / home invasions are taking place when the homeowner is at home in order for the thieves to put the homeowner under duress to disclose the location of any valuables.

I'd have though a safe hidden in the same spot couldn't be less effective?

I thought most burglaries these days are mainly going for small items they can carry easily and sell on quickly. I cant imagine they'd bother with a safe. Of course they might decide its worth coming back to that.

A family member's house was burgled recently. Nothing was disturbed in the kitchen or sitting room. Everything was examined/opened in the bedrooms upstairs.

When I am out I don't want someone to just walk away with passports, laptop, jewellery, bit of cash etc. It is all worth a couple of grand in value and hassle in the event of a burglary.

I am awaiting delivery of a small safe, boltable to wall and floor. The particular one I wanted was cheaper to buy from a German company, €54 cheaper, even after delivery costs, coming from Berlin compared to Meath.

any 1 see a safe wide enuff to take a laptop like in some hotels, wide and deep and about 200mm high?

I got a decent safe, a discontinued line from Chubb. It is big enough for my laptop. There are laptop safes available, I just wanted a general safe that could accomodate my laptop.

These have a big selection.

However, I got my safe €50 cheaper from [broken link removed] all the way from Berlin!

I was in an apartment belonging to a friend of mine and he had a small safe buried in concrete in a floor in a wardrobe. it was covered with a tile loose the same as the ones already on the floor of the wardrobe. I just got a key to lift up the loose tile and there was the door,, bingo. the little safe was just a nice size to hold money/ wallet/ keys/ passport. he said he bought in a security shop in Fredrick st off Nassau st in Dublin.

Sounds good, if I ever relocate I'll definitely consider a floor safe or a wall safe. I remember that shop, I used to work on South Frederick St. for years.
