My 4 year old son's Godmother has given him a lump sum equalling approx €1400 to invest long term till he is around 18. As a complete novice to investments I am hoping someone can advise where to start. My main questions being (and there may be many I haven't thought of):

Should I instruct an online or more convenetional Broker to execute trades. I notice both have Admin and account maintainance charges so I guess with such a small amount to invest I am concious of these?

Should I buy more than one type of shares, e.g. half Bank of Ireland and half in another sector completely?

Maybe shares aren't the best bet - whilst I do want to see a good return on the gift and it is long term I would prefer to take a low risk approach.

Sorry probably such basic questions as some of those on this forum are very detailed but your advice would be appreicated.

Thanks
