Hey,

Just wondering if someone can advise. I just received a cheque in my maiden name but my bank account is now in my married name. Will the bank lodge this cheque for me? My drivers licence is still in my maiden name so I still have ID and my bank account would have been in my maiden name previously. I think I have to lodge the cheque as it is a sterling cheque.

Can anyone advise- thanks a million :)

Endorse it on the back in your maiden name and then in your married name. You are one and the same person. On the front of the cheque after where your maiden name has been written you will see the words "or order". You have now passed it from yourself to yourself.

If the bank refuses to cash it, can you ask the issuer to reissue the cheque?
There can be a fee, but at work, if clients ask really nicely, and they have a really good reason, like 'my mother has Alzheimer and I've just found that cheque' or 'I advised you of my change of name in 2003 and I didn't receive your letter asking for a certified copy of my marriage certificate', we usually waive the fee.
