Loan Payment Protection without consent

Hi, wife has a car loan with well known loan company for the last year. A few months ago she received a letter asking her if she wanted loan protection. She didn't so stopped reading any further and put the letter away. A month later the company began taking money from her account. After looking into it, turns out the letter stated that if she did not reply then they would assume she wanted loan protection. We have got the two months of direct debit back in two separete checks and are progressing the issue with the finiancial regulator but my question is, is it legal to remove money from someones account without their written consent?

You should contact [broken link removed] or the [broken link removed] about this. As far as I know requiring consumers to explicitly opt out of such insurance cover is at best questionable and at worst illegal.
