You should check with your Credit Union to see if they provide mortgages.

They all set their own rates, so some may be cheap while others may be expensive.

They often make a song and dance about the fact that you can pay off a credit union loan early without penalty. You can always pay off a variable rate mortgage from any lender early without penalty.

Most banks charge an early repayment fee on fixed rate mortgages - some credit unions don't. Again, check the terms and conditions.

Credit Unions are restricted in the amounts they can lend out on mortgages, and the better value ones have waiting lists, so if you are thinking of buying a house at some stage in the future, get onto the waiting list.

Join a few different credit unions

If you are teacher married to a civil servant living in Dublin 4, you can probably join the Educate Credit Union, the Public Services Credit Union, Savii in Ringsend, and Capital Credit Union in Sandymount. The best value today might not be the best value when you are applying for your mortgage.
