Hi,
I was offered two jobs recently, one in Limerick city and the other in Mullingar. My head is melting trying to decide which one to take. The jobs are quite similar (pay similar & promotion prospects similar ) so its really down to location. Can anyone sell me either Mullingar or limerick as a place to live?

How much have you got? :D

Seriously, though, you'd need to give a little bit more information to get worthwhile advice. What are your other priorities? Do you have kids? Will you need to travel to Dublin frequently to visit family, etc.

I'm a Dub living in Limerick for the last 13 years and I find it great, so my own views are necessarily biased. And of course the meeja gives both places an unwarranted hammering...

I like Mullingar, it's a nice town with good amenities. I don't know Limerick very well but houses are cheaper then Dublin or Cork, you can pick one up just a knifes throw from the city centre for less than one in the outer 'burbs in Dublin :D

Limerick is a lively city, and although it has got a lot of bad press over the years it really is concentrated in disadvantage areas as like most cities in Ireland. Dooradoyle is a lovely area. Has a great shopping centre and amenities and is also near the new link road to Dublin/Cork. The shops are good and the nightlife in city is good too. Like any city really, good pubs, restaurants, shops and craic!!!

If Dublin is your current base, and you need to get there regularly, the train frequencies from Limerick are up to almost one per hour, and it takes two hours. Otherwise driving is also about 2 hrs.

I would plump for Limerick, just based on amenities vs. Mullingar.

In the end, the decision may just be down to where in the country your friends and family are, and which is more covenient to those.

Hi again,
Thanks for the replies. To be honest , my question lacked a little background info  Im currently working in Sligo , from Roscommon originally, closeness to family is not a priority. Im a 32 year old single male. House prices are immaterial to me, although I bought a house in Galway in 1999.

Im swaying towards Limerick at the moment. It seems to have a fair bit to offer . Im into my sports and swimming. Im also tied up with musical theatre and limerick appears to have a vibrant arts scene compared to mullingar

tanx

I'm from Mullingar (but go to DCU at the moment). Obviously again i'm going to be very biased!

Mullingar has plenty of good amenities with lots of good clubs. I'm many years involved with the local swimming club Mullingar Jets and can definately say its one of best in the country and very active. Theres a total of three 25m pools in the town at the moment (2 hotels and one council) + the council have unveiled plans to build another one in a new sports and leisure center on the outskirts of town. Personally I would'nt pick Limerick on the basis of the 50m pool - sure you'd never get to actually use it when its open fully (and besides theres a 50m pool 50min up the road in Blanchardstown).

As for sport in general, theres all the usual; Football, Hurling, Tennis (very active club and great facilities), Greyhound Racing (one of the top tracks in the country), Athletics (some top runners currently come out of the local area such as Mark Christie) and so on. There's also Cusack Park a pretty decent GAA venue. Theres also at least three private Gyms in the town.

As for culture, there is the Arts Center in the heart of the town which constantly has both exhibitions and palys. The local players group is superb and are very active... have done West Side Story, Showtime, This post will be deleted if not edited immediately Christ Superstar (brilliant play!) in the past few years. Also, don't forget your an hours train ride from Dublin City Center (Olympia, Gate etc.) - Trains run almost every 2 hours, but frequencies are increasing.

The town currently has one multiplex cinema, but a second is planned for the new shopping center to be built in the very center of the town - this center will be amongst the biggest ever constructed outside of Dublin (50+ units, new pedestrian streets etc.)

As for nightlife. Theres four nightclubs in the town (one of them is over 21's). Another will possibably open when the new Annebrook Hotel open in the town center (basically they are decideing its worth having a 5 star with no nightclub or a 4 star with nightclub). There's about 50 pubs in the town of varying demographics - althought I reckon Danny Byrnes in the town center is probably the nicest.

There's lots of other things around such as a proper poker club and some of the finest lakes in Ireland for fishing. I reckon its a very friendly town which, growing at such a rapid pace that it is, will offer both the worldiness of a city but rustic charm of a town... and its on the Sligo train line!

If you've any more questions... just ask... i'll try and be less biased! (BTW: I personally like Limerick... love the pool and its size... almost decided to go to college there... but still reckon Mullingars the better option!)

if your next employment doesnt work out or you go for something better then I presume its fair to say you'd have a better chance of getting that other job in Limerick/Shannon/Ennis as opposed to Mullingar.

Maybe you'd say that you could go to Dublin from Mullingar for that other job but I wouldnt wish that lifestyle on you!

In all seriousness if you are getting so stressed from trying to figure out where to go perhaps neither is the right place for you.

A job is just a job. If you are thinking short-term then simply go for the location which suits your lifestyle the best. Failing that get a piece of paper write down the pros and cons of each one and make your decision and stick to it.

Don't get too stressed. You can always move if it doesn't suit you. Check if the companies you have been offered positions with have other locations that you could transfer to if you're hoping to stick at the job long term.

Best of luck. Remember its not where you are that matters, its who you're with :)
