I need to get under the floor boards upstairs so that the plumber can lay some water pipes . How do I lift the carpet without tearing it and how do I stretch & nail it back onto the board of little nails afterwards?

Just ease it away from the gripper rods a bit at a time. If it has been down for a little while then it should go back down fairly easily, but if you are not confident on this then a carpet fitter should do very cheaply - no cutting required etc.
