Life of a motor tyre

I am a very careful driver with a very low annual mileage. My problem is changed the tyres several years ago but cannot remember precisely when. The tyres seem in very good condition which has been confirmed by a garage. With little wear when should a person change say 5 years?

If they're good tires and don't get overly used then 5 years could be expected of them. There are tread wear indicators on tires now that show if the tires have reached a low level, check these on your car.

A lot will depend on the tyre itself as well. The quality and compound of rubber play a significant role. Cheap poor quality rubber will deteriorate more rapidly than better quality rubber, even with little or no use. Softer compound tyres which will provide better grip ratings will wear more quickly than harder compounds.

Exposure to salt on the roads during winter will also speed up the deterioration of tyres.
