Letting off Steam: Better tamer, or rocking when rowdier?

Anyone think Letting Off Steam is more fun when the cranks and trolls are getting themselves all lathered up? (Now there's a horrible image.) Or does it just distract from considered discussion and should they be stamped on like slugs in Vanilla's garden?

Please delete this thread it's inappropriate to comment on the site itself!

Well, in answer to your presumably rhetorical question, i suppose it is to provide a forum for people to ask about money.

But the Depths exists! I didn't put it there or ask for it, I just find it an amusing appendage.

People are copping onto the trolls and therefore dont bite when onee interrupts a discussion, but they can be entertaining.............

Hi Erith,

What do you think the objectives of AAM should be?

aj

The objectives of AAM are quite clear. It's mostly here to help people (in both a financial and non-financial capacity) and for regulars to have the odd discussion down here too.

ajapale,

Rather than closing the ratemyteachers post (which was quite interesting) why not just delete the posts which have nothing to do with the jist of the thread? In other words, up until my post right after macnas's.

Locking threads because of trollish behaviour (instead of deleting it and banning them) merely gives in to what they were originally trying to achieve - upset the ebb and flow of normal debate.

But it takes the moderators time and effort to read through threads and delete what isn't relevant/inoffensive/libelous etc. It's easier to close the thread once it starts denegrating people/institutions/companies etc..

If people cannot abide by the rules, moderate their own behaviour and exercise a little cop on and self restraint, they should be prepared to live with the consequences.

Forcing people to register before they post in LoS (but allowing them to contribute unregistered to financial/non-financial issues) might negate some of the problems.

Yes CCOVICH, but if you're a troll then your goals will be easily met won't they? Just drop into any post and start posting nonsense and hey presto it gets locked. The only happy individual is the troll.

I didn't give ajapale enough credit anyway as he's re-opened the ratemyteachers thread and deleted the rubbish.

At the moment unregistered users are still allowed and, in general, this has not been overly exploited for trolling/nuisance posting. If this does happen (as eventually happened over on ezBoard) then mandatory registration for most or all forums will probably be (re)introduced (which, in my personal opinion, would be a shame). If that happens then any (inplicitly registered) user who persistently contravenes the posting guidelines will be banned. Also a shame but a necessary evil I'm afraid.

Nobody is really answered my question except Stobear who thinks the cranks are great fun. Trolls diverting the course of an honest thread. Hah.
I know Clubman thinks the nuts are fun too, although he will probably protest indignantly.

You'll need to be more subtle than that to get a rise out of me! ;)
