I got let go today from my job. I have been reading threads and I checked out the SW pages but am looking for a bit of real-life advice regarding claiming Jobseekers Benefit if anyone has it.
I was working with construction/building industry and there have already been several dozen people released from the company with more to come so I can't say it was a big surprise to me. I started the job in July last year on a 6 month probation. When I got my weeks notice today I would be finished next Wednesday, exactly 6 months in the job.
When my manager told me today he said that he didn’t feel I was working out and they had a couple of issues with my work. I asked him to specify these, he was vague about them but gave me 2 areas where they felt I had not performed. I told him I was surprised to hear this as in 6 months I had never been told of any issues or had any kind of feedback from him or any other manager. He said I could work the week but would understand if I didn’t wish to, in the end I stuck it out for 2 hours more and told him I was too upset to carry on and I left.
I have never had to claim dole but understand I should be able to claim Jobseekers Benefit, I have been working full time and paying Class A PRSI for 18 months and before that was working part-time so I don’t think I paid any – though I think my husband might have paid some for me. From a tax point of view I only got a basic PAYE allowance as we are jointly assessed.
What I am trying to establish is will I be refused because I was let go at the end of a probationary period, would this be a reason to turn down my claim? (There was absolutely no misconduct and although I left today I don’t officially leave until next Wednesday (16th) – so I know I can’t claim until then. ) I am seeking and available for work, I’d already sent my CV round as I knew this was probably coming and I hoping that I get something sorted out soon and I am already enrolled doing an accounting technician course 2 evenings a week to improve my prospects.
Apologies if I sound daft, just in a bit of a tizz/panic as I have never been in this situation before.
