Length of Service and Redundancy

I have just found out that I am to be made redundant and have a question about my lenght of service.

I started my job in 1982 but left in Dec 2004 to work for another firm in the same line of work, my boss didn't want me to leave and said that the door was open if I wanted to come back.

Anyway 3 months later I hated my new job and I took him up on his offer and came back to my old job with the same pay and conditions. So my question is have I shot myself in the foot and lost 20 odd years of redundancy money and now am only entitled to claim for the last four years. I'm stressed to bits as hubbie is now longer working either so any help with this question would be appreciated.
 
Sorry I have another question in relation to the above, my employer also said that they have no money to pay the redundancy so we must apply to the government, anyone know how this works or how long it takes.

I'm afraid if you resigned from the job in dec 2004 then you have lost those years of service. Your redundancy will then be calculated with a start date of march 2005.

If your employer does not have the funds to pay your redundancy, then your payment will come from the Social Insurance Fund. You need to have an RP50 form completed (part A is your notice of redundancy, part B is the application to claim from the social fund.) This should be sent to Dept of enterprise in Davitt House when completed. To speed up the process your employer could also send proof that he does not have the funds to pay the redundancy.
