Lego - where to get the 'normal' stuff ?

Does anyone know whether you can still get big boxes of normal lego ? Before anyone tries to pick me up on the definition of 'normal' I am talking about the ordinary straight & flat pieces, not things that can only be used as part of a space station or dinosaur or helicopter or whatever.

Our kids have got lots of lego in the last few years as presents but when we consolidated them all recently there was only a very small amount that could be easily re-used as part of a house or other type of building. I just want to get a big load of stuff they can use, but at the prices lego currently sells for it would probably use up all my SSIA to build up a stock like most of us had as kids.

When I were a lad . . . . all we had was the basic stuff and it was a lot more flexible than all the specialised stuff you get now.

Well, for a start I hope you haven't been googling for "Lhe ego"... :p

Any of these [broken link removed] on the buy&sell website any use?

I got a big box of regular Lego for my kids in Smyths about a year ago, I think it was about €30-40. It has plenty of different colours shapes and sizes and a book to give ideas on what and how to build. My kids love it (as does Mr. Mohawk) and they get great use from it.

Second for the Smyths. it's a large blue box, and it costs about €30. Hours of fun for everyone. Plenty of little bits to block the hoover though. :(

My kids got a present of two boxes of 'Mega bloks'. There was 1400 pieces in each box. It's not lego but the pieces are identical to lego and can be used interchangable with their existing lego. The only difference is the pieces don't have 'lego' written on them and the colours are slightly different.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I had looked through Smyths & one of the Toymaster places on Saturday and didn't see them, but it looks like the boxes are out there. I'll keep my eyes open and try again.

Cheers,
