Legality of posted speeding fines

I was stopped the other day going over the limit in Galway & the Garda, who was being fairly sound about it, told me that I had been caught speeding. He didn't show me any evidence that I had been or issue me with an on the spot fine but he did say that there would be a fine in the post. The fine just came today but a friend told me that unless a fine or notification was issued on the spot then I can dispute the claim when it goes to court. Does anyone know whether I have a leg to stand on here or not? Thanks lads & ladies

What you just described is an on the spot fine... the alternative is that you get a summons and go to court. If you don't accept the on the spot fine then you can challenge it, and go to court.

You friend doesn't know what they are talking about.

Most type of fines are all sent in the post now.

Were you speeding? Did you get caught speeding? If so cough up.
Yet another thread where someone is trying to get out of things me thinks!

plus if you do go to court and fail you get double the penalty points as far as i know
