Leaving work - when can I claim back overpaid tax?

I will be leaving work in a month or so to take a short break and then head back to college. The tax that I have paid each month so far this year will have been worked out on the average from last year, and assuming that I work a full year this year (or so I believe - I may be wrong).

Given that I am stopping working early in the tax year, there will be a lot less payable (if any) in the top tax band than has been calculated to date, and I will be due this back.

Do I have to wait until I do my tax return for 2009 (which I will only be able to submit in 2010) before I will be able to get this tax back, or will I be able to claim the tax back this year when I have stopped working? (presumably upon writing to the tax office telling them that I will have no income for the rest of the year).

You can apply on form P50 ( download from revenue.ie ) which has sections to explain income for rest of year.

Hi, unless you are self employed which I am assuming you are not you wont have to wait until you can send in your tax return for 2009. If your intention is to remain a student for the rest of the tax year send in the P50 and you will get a partial refund then can keep applying every 4 weeks or so. A pain i know but this is the system!!!
