Leaving Ireland for a few years - will we lose all social security / state benefits?

Later this year/early next year, my wife and I (both Irish citizens) will move to the US to work for two or three years. We have both been fully employed and paying tax/PRSI/USC in Ireland for the last 14 years.

When we return from the US, will we be starting from zero in terms of social security/welfare/health entitlements and protections? Or will our previous tax/contributions stand to us, including (much!) later in life when we retire?

When you return to Irl , you will find your 14 years will be added onto your then (new) ongoing Irl contributions.
There is no need to worry.At worst you will not be credited with the 3 years in USA.
There are also ways to (buy-Back) lost years.

Very interested in 'buying back years' Please give us more information.

I understood that apart from when we paid voluntary contributions, in the 70's when over a certain income you could not contribute any longer, then you could pay arrears up to about 2 years or some similar period, if you fell behind on your contributions.
