My son is studying History in UCD. I was shocked by how basic and simplistic the content was in first year but maybe that's because I'm not just out of school and have had an interest in the subject for 30+ years.
Interesting doing the rounds of University open days at the minute and History is one of the things on the list. Most of them said the same things, in Uni, it is less about the what and more about the why these days as the what was covered in secondary school.
I do find some of the things on the LC History course a bit odd. Jarrow march for example might have been important across the little pond but was it relevant to Ireland or globally?
My youngest did a Junior cert CBA on a particular ambush in the War of Independence, in fairness, going off and researching it and bringing it all together for a coheirant project was an excellent learning experience for her.
@JoeRoberts Agree re the gap, despite a respectable B in higher level maths in LC, found it very tough going to get a pass in 1st year as an ancillary subject .
I had the opposite experience. Having achieved a B in LC maths I found first year engineering a breeze. I did get a rude awakening in second year.
