Laying wooden floor with a tiled edging

We are planning on tiling most of our kitchen/dining area, but having a certain section in the middle laid with a wooden floor. It is a big room so should look fine, but wondering about the practicalities of installation.
Has anyone else done this?
Thanks,
S

Is it the sitatuion of how you meet tile and wood you are interested in Susan?

Yeah. Problems like getting the two of them level and how do the meet?
Have seen it in magazines, but not up close.

If your floors are not level then you level them with self-levelling cement before you lay either the tiles or timber
There is a special housing used where timber and tiles join.
The house is metal and is U shaped. the back of the U is against the tiles and the timber flooring fits into the front of the U.
You will have to put the metal housing down before he the tiling is done so that the tiles sit up tight to it, just bed the tiles higher on the edge so that they are level with the top of the metal housing.

Anything else please ask

Yop,

Will you be able to see this metal strip? Doesn't a timber floor need some space to expand and contract?

Thanks for the info. Yeah, would you be able to see the strip. Would prefer not to?

Thanks,
S

Aye you will alright, not a lot u can do about except remove the strip completly and butt the timber and tiles together, then when both are down you grout between them. I did that where out timber meets the semi circular hearth we have.

Note that grout won't be flexible enough to expand and contract with the wood, so will crack after a time.

Leo, there is a flexi grout I got from Tubs N Tiles believe it or not!! Down now about 8 months with no cracks, make it rock strong and it will help.
