Lawnmower and rights

Bought a petrol mower last March in a dept chain.
It was always difficult to start and wasn't happy with it.
I never got around to returning it

Due to the bad weather I have used it maybe 10 times

Last night it billowed thick white smoke, and another type of smoke was emitting from the casing. This could be oil etc but I am uncomfortable with storing it in our shed

I still have the receipt, and want to return, am I entitled to a replacement or will they examine and eventually repair

Regards

Check instructions - they often advise a complete oil change after first 5 hrs of use - if this is the case, and if you didn't do so, it will probably be obvious to the store.

...and then of course regardless of other problems you were having, this will be the focus.

The National Consumer Agency website is a good source of information. Take a look at for example

The right to a replacement is not automatic. You will notice that the store has rights regarding how to respond to your complaint, whether to replace, repair or refund but there are avenues open to you if you aren't happy with their response. Be polite but firm and if it looks as though there'll be some dificulty, ask to deal with the most senior person you can get access to. Keep notes of dates, times, who you speak to and what was said.

It's possible that oil from the crankcase had entered the combustion chamber, this can happen if you tilt the engine up to clear grass from the underside (when the engine is turned off and stationery obviously); but such smoke should clear after a minute of so.

FYI, they replaced the lawnmower without quibble

Of course the old one started first time (has never done that) and without any smoke when they were examining it
