Planted a couple french lavender some time ago. they do not look too good. Should they flower now?

Lavender can be fairly hardy but I wouldn't be surprised if the cold got to them.

They won't flower until the summer but you should be able to tell if they are still alive or not. If they're all brown and dried out they're probably done for.

Small lavender plants aren't that expensive and now (or at least once the cold nights are past) is the right time to plant them out. They like it chalky and well drained so try not to put them in claggy, clay type soil.

Have to say, I'm not a big fan of the look or smell of French Lavender once they get going but other varieties are fantastic for the scent. If you've got random plants in a border try mixing them up with some Night Scented Stock. Their look and smell really compliment one another.

I have a fair few mature lavender plants around the garden. i have not lost any to the cold snaps over the past few years and I live fairly high up in altitude and in a open area.
lavenders are inclined to get very woody if you do not prune them regulary.
Usually around this time of year I cut them right back to around half their size and a lot of new buds/growth comes out of the wood stems and base.

Just been out to have a look at mine that are out in pots. I've not had a chance to get out into the garden properly yet this year. Disgraceful really. Anyway, they are very woody at the top but quite a lot of life in the base. Will chop the tops out and see what they do.

I am starting to see a few flowers now. Should they be cut back a bit? And should i water them?

Lavender should be cut back before the growing season, not now, except for dead-wooding, and/or a small amount fo tidy-up. If the soil is very dry, water them. Lavender is adapted to dry conditions, so don't over-water.

Thanks when does the scent start, i lov ethe scent of lavender

It should be within a few weeks. I have some French L. in a very sunny spot, and it's almost in bloom. Likely to be a bit longer with more exposed plants. Be patient, as you know it's worth it!

I accidently cut off a stem with a flowering head today. Can i use that to grow more from seed or is it too early? If yes, how do i do it?

Generally you need a hormone promoter you can pick up in a centre, and dip the end in. But you might get away without this. Cut the edge at an angle so your left with a pointy tip. Remove lower leaves, plant in moist garden sand, and wait. If your lucky you'll have a wee new lavender in a few weeks. Do not overwater as the slip will rot.

you can use honey for that can't you?

I've heard that, but never done it. The thing is the plant needs to "know" to grow a root, and usually that is by a hormone. Honey may contain the hormone, i just don't know. Often tho I have managed to grow slips without it, but the hormone powder is definitely a better option. It's not expensive. Good TLC will help, sand is ideal medium as it stops rot, keep on windowsill, moist but not wet.

Our Lavender plants are looking very healthy at the moment. We have about a dozen of them clumped together in a very dry spot. No flowers just yet. We trimmed them back lightly last year but not in to the woody bit.

if you wanted to make a hedge like [broken link removed] how close would they need to be together? and how many rows thick?

Cleaning my windows yesterday and brushing against the lavender plants was lovely. The scent from the plants brought back memories of a visit to a lavender outlet in Provence a few years back. So much so I am going to extend the bed by another 6' or so. The problem with lavender is that when they die off in the winter you have a bare plant bed.
