I enjoy Jools. Yeah, he's a bit chaotic and frenetic and his interview style lacks journalistic polish, but he's a genuinely talented muso who gets down and jams with the best of them and for that I can forgive him anything.
There's a real connection between Jools and his guests, even the drunken ones [New Year's Eve Live, some English comedian locked??] , that is rare. His interviews IMHO are free of the fawning, sycophantic talk-show BS that turns some other shows into extended back-to-back ads. Sure the CD, gig, tour, book, come-back gets plugged, but Jools displays it to camera back-to-front, drops it, gets the dates / venues wrong and just ploughs ahead in his inimitable style - "And now, joining us on a stop-off from their world-wide tour of Ballivor and Carndonagh we have the enormous, the original, the exciting, the one, the only South African céilí band, Ladysmith Black Mambazo!"
.

a bit of a Nick Drake night on BBC4
Good old Bob Harris. Others I remember were Anne Nightingale and Andy Kershaw. Anne did the Lennon memorial programme after his murder in 1980. A few of us who'd gigged together during school-days and for a while after met up and did the ultra uncool crying thing during the programme. There was only one female present (since dead of cancer, RIP) and she dished out the tissues. Some of the programmes were available on DVD but that was a while ago.
Later with Jools and Other Voices on RTE2 are the best music shows on the box.... From an old dude like me who was reared on Whispering Bob on the Old Grey Whistle Test.
I was really impressed with "Transatlantic Sessions" which went out on RTE2 and BBC earlier this year. Format was particularly good looked impromtu (although I'm sure it wasn't) like a good session with Musicians locked up in a cottage over the weekend to play together.
