Lastminute.com being unhelpful-advice needed.

My son purchased two return flight tickets to the USA through Lastminute.com. last June for travel next October. Within 24 hours of purchase he attempted to cancel these because his partner could not travel.
Since then he has contacted Lastminute by email on several occassions but each time he gets back the exact same standard reply letter saying that they cannot offer a refund.
He has tried changing the date of travel, the names on the tickets etc but Lastminute will not even respond to his specific requests, just the same standard email.
Is there anything that he can do? He is prepared to pay a cancellation fee/administration fee etc Considering that he is not travelling until October I thought that changes/cancellation of the tickets would be possible.?
 
what does it say on the T&C, once you agree to these you are bound by them. each web site and carrier is differnet so these will hold the key me thinks.
