I saw a number of very large insect on the bark of a larch tree yesterday. These guys were about 60mm long and very skinny. they were couleres like a wasp, i.e. the abdomen was yellow and black striped, and they had very long legs. It also had a long needle like thing at the end of it's abdomen. I looket up hornets on the web and these appeaar to be the saame build as wasps. My friends were proportionatly much longer with much longer legs and this very long tail like thing. I did find a similar beast on the web, a horntail, but I dont think that it was one of those, but it was very similar.
There are hundreds of varieties of bees and wasps. It would be impossible to identify them without a photograph or a body.
Catch one and send it to Michael Viney of the Irish Times. When the Natural History Museum was open, one could bring it to them for identification. They have some Irish insects on display in Collins Barracks.
Sounds like a Ichneumon wasp: Skinny, longer than regular waps, with very long legs the long stinger thing is for egg laying, common and harmless enough. [broken link removed]
Pretty scarey looking things!!
I saw one once and ran for the hills.. Later thinking I had discovered a new species,
I was intrigued so did some research only to find it's fairly common.
