It loads ok when connected via mains power?

I've never noticed a difference on my laptop with speeds between mains and battery, but it could come down to individual settings. I know with many programmes you can set it differently between mains and battery power, so potentially I have a very different setting between the two (I think it's only really settings on defrag (I use disk keeper for auto defragging), power off/standby options and some security scans which are different between the two).

Check Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options and see if there is an "on battery" power profile and if there is see if there are any odd settings that might be causing this problem. For example shutting down the disk at very short intervals. Perhaps this is happening and the laptop is spending a lot of time starting it back up when on battery power? Also check the Windows Event Log in case there are any clues there (Start -> My Computer, right click and choose Manage -> Event Viewer -> System).
