Landlords writing false references

Last Saturday I was seconds away from accepting a family (not Irish) for a one year lease. Super reference form previous LL and both working. However I decided I would go check out their old address (was going to say I lost their phone number) before confirming. So off I go and arrive at the address only to see an Army of workmen and the LL. I went and asked were the family still living here and was told 'no thank god'. I explained who I was and was let into see the property. It was destroyed. Everything had to be put in the skip. I have never seen anything like it in all my time.

But the person who let me in is the same person who wrote a super reference and confirmed it when I rang a week before :-(

Whats going on here? Thank god I didn't let them into my property.
If I had taken them and they then destroyed my property also would I have a case for redress again the previous landlord?

I believe this family are still looking for a property in the D24 area so be warned.

what is the profile of the family

Re: Landllords writing false references

collie has asked an interesting and specific question. This is not ratemytenant.ie -- lets not get into a description of the tenants.

Re: Landllords writing false references

Can you prove he is the one you wrote the reference , e.g that it was not a forgery?

I do not think you that the previous landlord would have any responsability at all shall the tenants had damaged your property.

Note:
a family (not Irish)
is that not unecessary information?

The previous landlord just probably wanted to get rid of them, and giving a good reference probably helped his cause.

Which would also have been irrelevant based on the original post. The origin of the tenants has no bearing on the substantive issue raised.
