I have an automatic car and I think the L drive is for driving in snow conditions, is this correct? It's a Honda HRV.
thanks

Correct nearly40. The L is for LOW - as in torque. Driving up into a snowy or muddy driveway. Climbing power and suchlike.

Low gear.

The gearbox won't change up to a higher gear than that selected. Won't help you in snow, more of use for descending a hill with engine braking.

Some auto cars have a snow setting - this will start off in 2nd or 3rd to minimise wheelspin.

Many modern autos don't have the traditional PRND321 or PRNDL as they have a tiptronic function.

I don't think the "L" means low.It means lock up.Effectively if you start off in "L" the gearbox stays in first gear without changing up automatically. If you start off in "D" allow the gearbox to change up to second and then shift to "L" you will only have first and second available until you shift back to "D"Its very handy for towing a caravan because when in "L" you have engine braking which you don't have in "D"
