Kitchen renovation question on laminate worktops

I'm researching new worktops, laminates are best for my budget. but I noticed a disclaimer "The high-pressure laminates are heat resistant up to 160°C (hot pots cannot be placed directly on to laminate surfaces)." is this something new? I'm sure i have taken saucepans off the stove and put them down on the counter and there wasn't a problem. can anyone advise?

There's not many (any?) countertops that do not get (eventually) damaged by putting a hot pan directly on it - either immediately or over time.
I am not sure why one would want to do so anyways, it is easy enough to use a cork mat or similar

Manufactures would put a disclaimer for this very reason.

I replaced my kitchen last year, went for laminate and was given same warning, mind you I had laminate for previous 30 yrs and would never have put a hot pan off hob directly on it so just thought it was one of these new warnings where you have to tell people everything like 'peanuts may contain nuts' sort of thing. I would always throw a tea towel under even things like cake tins coming out of oven, only makes sense!

I don't think any laminate old or new was meant to withstand that, you've just been lucky if you haven't damaged it in the past!

I would never put anything hot on a laminate surface. I'm sure that the glue under the laminate will be affected if the laminate isn't.

Use one of these.
