Key would not fit in ignition without force!

Just locked car to run into shop when came back and unlocked it the key wonuld not fit into the ignition. There was a silver piece that seemed to pop up in the opening and the key would not go in at all so after some time and brute force it went in and I got it to come back out but it will be touch and go to see if it goes back in in the morning, what would cause this and is there anything I can do jst to make sure I can get key in once more to get home as away up the county at the minute and want to take it to mechanuc at home.

There can be a spring loaded dust cover over the slot. I assume thats what you are talking about. I would say try not jam that down into the lock. Because it may not be that easy to get it out if you do that.
