Just married and opting for joint assessment!

Hi all,

We got married earlier this year. We both updated our civil status accordingly and opted for Joint Assessment. I understand that to avail of my wife’s unused standard cut off for partial 2024 I need to file for 2024.

However, we got our tax credit certs for 2025 just recently and they are still reading as for two single people ie €44k cut off each.

There are a couple of websites that reference changing the distribution on myaccount, but I can’t find anything of the sort. I also see references that the higher earner automatically becomes the assessable person, not sure how they foresee the higher earner!

Then there is a reference to filling out a paper form to change the assessable spouse and to submit by 31 March.

Has anybody got any advice on how to complete this task ?

Thanks

I think the couple must submit an Assessable Spouse form:

Sorry, I see now that this form is not necessary, and you can change your Civil Status in MyAccount:

How to select an assessable spouse or nominated civil partner

You can decide which of you is to be the assessable person.

You can do this by:

You must do this on, or before, 31 March in the year you want the selection to apply.

You do not have to make the selection. If no selection is made, the spouse or civil partner with the higher income automatically becomes the assessable spouse or nominated civil partner.

The assessable spouse or nominated civil partner does not change until you and your spouse or civil partner:

  • select the other spouse or civil partner
  • or
  • select for Separate Assessment or Separate Treatment.

From memory - once you elect to change the assessable spouse online you've got to wait a day or two for the new assessable spouse to be able to access the tax return pages.

Thanks but that is the link I found. Note how step two states to submit the paper form.

My issue is more how to get a corrected tax credit cert for both of us without sending in a paper form. Seems strange that it is all online but only to a point.

When you get set up for Joint Assessment you should see a section in myaccount called

Divide tax credits

You can make any changes in credits and bands there.

There are three options to make the change, you can choose any of them.

That’s what I was hoping for, thanks.

I don’t see the section. Possible it won’t show until 2025 starts?

On the home page, click the 3 horizontal lines in the top righthand corner.
You should then see the Divide tax credits section. It should be there when you can see your spouses details.
Check if these are available by clicking on your name on the home page.

Thanks a mill

I don’t see “Divide tax credits” when I click the 3 horizontal menu button. All I get is;

My details

My Enquiries

When I go into My Details, I am set to Married but no spouse details to be seen.

I guess I will have to raise an enquiry
