Hi all,i'm just a beginner and want to buy my first digital camera.I think i have decided on the Canon Powershot A520 and was going to buy from pixmania but just saw a website called Technikdirekt and had a look at them and they were cheaper.Just wondering if you buy from them does the manual come in english or is it german cos if i buy from pixmania the manual comes in french.I have also seen some bad reviews about pixmania so was just looking for opinions.
While i'm here can anyone tell me if the powershot is worth buying?I only want to spend up to about 230 euro.
Any replies appreciated.

One idea might be to check out the cameras on sale/special offer in Argos at the moment. We got what we feel was a good deal on a Fuji FinePix from them last year. I saw a good spec Pentax in Currys last week as well. Might be worth checking out 'bricks and mortar' retailers while the sales are on?

I bought one a few weeks ago and reckon it's a good option for the price range that you're talking about. So far it looks like a good point and shoot camera for the casual photographer coupled with lots of more advanced options for the more dedicated enthusiast. However you really should have a browse of some of the excellent review sites out there before buying in order to assess the different options available and make sure that you choose a camera that suits your particular needs.

Dixons and PC world advertised extensively in the national newspapers over the last few days - Dixons seemed to have a greater selection, on the basis of the ads, including the Pentax camera that CCOVICH referred to ( assume its the €189.99 one).

I wouldnt go near PC world or any of those places.......the staff don't have a clue what they are talking about - all 17 year old students who don't care.
There are a few specialist camera shops in Dublin (one just near Suffolk Street) and the staff are brilliant & tell you everything you need to know. Also they are no more expensive than bigger electrical goods shops.
From what I can gather the important things are:

Rechargible Battery
> 5Million Pixels (min)
Optical & Digital Zoom
& for these things the lowest price bracket is approx €280.

Better off doing your own reasearch on the web and then buying in PC World etc. if they are cheaper. The Pentax camera mentioned above is €100 less than the average of €280 mentioned and the spec is in line with the aspects you have mentioned.

Thanks for all the replies.I've ordered the Canon A520 and ordered it from a us website.I got it for 190euro and that included buying a camera case and a 512memory card.reckon i got a good deal.having it sent to a friend in the states who'll post it on as a gift so i should avoid the import tax. Thanks again for replying.:)
