If myself and my wife are both working and each earning over the standard rate cut off point would it be ok to be jointly assessed with the credits etc split 50/50. The examples on the revenues site assume one spouse is earning under the cut off point and the other spouse gets all the married allowances which might not suit us or would it? I just dont understand this.

With both of you over the SRCOP it really makes no difference what way your credits/cut-off is distributed.

However, there is no problem with having everything split 50/50.

Call Rev PAYE helpline on 1890 333425 (if you live in Dublin) and just confirm everything is split 50/50. If not, request it if that's what you want.
