Hi

Just a quick PAYE query under Joint assessment for a married couple.

If husband earns 50k for 08 and wife earns 0k. The tax credits that can be applied to the 50k earned by the husband are:

Married Tax credit: 3660
PAYE Tax credit: 1830

Is this correct, i.e. husband cannot use wifes PAYE tax credit of 1830? And, husband can take the full Married Tax credit?

Thanks

The PAYE credit is non-transferable so the husband cannot get the wife's unused PAYE credit.

The husband can take the married credit on joint assessment if the spouses agree to do that.

Thanks!

One final question on this. Would the husband have to contact the revenue and specifically request that he wants the full Married Tax credit of 3660(i.e. as wife will have no earnings for this year) or is this something that would happen automatically

If the husband does not presently have the wife's share of the married credit (see tax credit cert ) then it would be best to ring Revenue (contact details on the cert)

You'll need to inform Revenue one way or another about the marriage otherwise they will continue to treat you as two single people.
