Joint assessment but only 1 working-refund?

Hi,
we got married in the summer and have applied to be jointly assessed from next year. My spouse has moved here from abroad and is currently job-hunting.

My question is; if he doesn't find employment, will we be entitled to a refund of tax at the end of the year, as there is only one of us currently working?

Am I right in saying that you get a higher SRCOP as a married couple with one spouse working?
 
You will likely receive a tax refund after December and yes- you get a higher SRCOP and also a home carer's credit.

My understanding of the procedure is as follows:


  1. The tax due is computed on the basis that you are both assessed as two single individuals
  2. The tax due is recomputed on the basis that you are married and jointly assessed.
  3. The difference between 1 and 2 is your saving. You will get back a proportion of this saving based on the fraction of the year that you were married.

He hasn't received any certificate of tax allowances yet. Does anyone know, are they only issued when you are in employment?

the home carer's credit only applies where there are children and/or a dependent relative to take care of and doesn't apply, in any case, in the year of marriage.
 
He will need a PPS number which he can request from his local Dept of Welfare.

Once this is received, Form 12A is used to apply for tax credits- see here.

Good point- I forgot to mention that, sorry- see here for conditions
 
There are no dependents so that won't apply.

Have read the two links and it looks like he'll have to wait until he gets a job before he can submit the form 12A to the Revenue to get a certificate of tax credits.

So here's hoping something turns up..
