Joining an orchestra?

Anyone here in an orchestra?

WHat is the normal pre-requisite for being allowdd join an orchestra?
Must you have completed up as far as grade 8 exams?

Or are some orchestras less strict?

The level of musicianship required would depend on the professional level of the orchestra I'd imagine.Community style groups like brass bands usually accept players with a good level of competence. I'd imagine a community style orchestra would be similar?
Professional groups would require more strict qualifications I'd guess. What type of group is it?

You generally need to audition - there are several around the country. Many Youth orchestras have older members as well.

Also depends on the instrument you play. There are generally lots of spots open for string players but usually only a couple of each type for wind/percussion.

You might try posting on the Classical Ireland Yahoo group. It's run by the Hibernian Orchestra in Dublin. The Hibernian are probably at a higher standard than you are looking for, but someone there might have some pointers.
