I am currently receiving Jobseekers Benefit and was offered a job last week. I am due to sign contracts in early September but the start date is not until the end of October partly because I'm on holidays for two weeks and partly because with projects and leave, this is what suits the company best. Can anyone advise if I can continue to receive Jobseekers Benefit while waiting to start my new job. If so, do I need to look for temporary work in the meantime?
Congrats on your new job. Just continue to sign on as normal. Although you are going on holidays, the company is not hiring you til end of October. Do not even mention to DSP that you have a job until you are just about to commence. You have paid enough PRSI to qualify for JSB. You are available for work, its just that it doesn't suit the company to hire you straight away.
Thanks - that makes a lot of sense. I know I have to apply for the two weeks holidays with the DSP then I'm back a week and I start!
Unfortunately, I suspect I'll need to attend an appointment with an employment support person at some point before I start my new job but I suppose it's no harm to go along anyway and just not mention it - you're right, I'm not officially hired until the end of October and I'm happy enough to keep my eye out for something temporary in the meantime.
