Hi, I've a quick question about welfare for a non-national. My boyfriend is moving to Ireland in the coming months and I'm wondering if he can claim any form of social welfare while he looks for a job? He holds a German passport (he's from South America) and was working there for around a year and a half up until the company laid him off in mid 2008 and he went travelling. He told me that in Germany if you lose your job you get 70pc of your wages until you find a new job - but they lean very heavily on you to get work and actively follow up with you every week. He never claimed any welfare there.
He plans to get a job here and I want to stress that he does NOT plan to claim welfare for long and does not want to 'milk the system'. But it may take him a few months until he finds work. I'm just wondering what are his entitlements as an EU citizen? Is the fact that he is is entitled to social welfare in Germany relevant?
Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
