My partner has been on jobseekers benifit a year in Jan,we've since got a form out from him to apply for jobseekers allowance which is means tested. someone has said he wont get it because Im working and coming out with 412euro a week after tax, does this seem right,we've a mortgage of 1300 a month and two young children who we cant claim for due to me working,

We have the medical card which is one good thing, but Im starting to stress how we're going to cope if he is going to be cut off. We're not married so I cant even claim his tax credits.

He's been looking for work nearly every day theres just nothing out there.

So is there anything we're entilted to or do you think he'll get the jobseekers allowance

Thank you for your advice

The assessment for JA where a partner/spouse is working is as follows:

Assessable earnings= gross less PRSI, Union dues, Superannuation, AVC, PRSA (but not income tax)

Disregard €20 for each day of work up to a max of 3 days (so a max disregard of €60 pw).

Subtract the disregard from the assessable earnings to give you a net assessable income.

60% of the net assessable income is counted as means.

If the means are greater than the JA rate for 2 adults and 2 children (currently €372.40) then there is no entitlement.
If the means are less than the JA rate, then the entitlement is the difference between them.

The mortgage outgoings are not taken into account.

If you are working 19 hrs per week or more, you may be entitled to Family Income Supplement (FIS). You can get more details on FIS here:
