Both myself and my husband are skilled professionals, unable to find work, first time on Job seekers benefit which is due to run out around next June. I'm worried sick that we won't be entitled to any further payments as we each have a house, one of which we live in and the other which is rented out.
As there is more equity in both houses than qualifies for the means test does this mean we won't get any more payments? The rented house makes enough to just pay the mortgage, we are left with a small income of about €200 per month. As house prices have fallen dramatically selling it would release some cash but only enough to live on for a year or so. We also have a mortgage on the house we live in and have savings set aside for this so if our Job seekers benefit were cut we would have to live off this, it wouldn't be long before we would be in mortgage arrears. We really rely on Job seekers benefit for essentials such as food etc. and would be totally at a loss if it were to be cut.
We also have two children under the age of two, does anyone know if the means test only applies to property or do they take other factors into consideration also?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
