looking for a complete change

considering middle east teaching english (as my girlfriend has a degree)

and labouring / fitting for me

what kind of wages are in this area

what is the cost of living like

Have you been to the Middle East before?

If you haven't perhaps you should look at a more 'western-minded' country than Saudi Arabia.

Qatar has a great standard of living for expats - if your girlfriend is a teacher - she could try applying to one of the schools there:

Doha International College
Qatar International School

Have a look on the net for international schools in Qatar, Dubai, Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.

As for labouring / fitting - you may find it difficult to find a job there unless you have a particular skill - most of the labourers are from Asia and are very poorly paid.

Good luck!

It is near impossible for you to travel in as a couple to Saudi, only marrieds get visas and rights. Unless you take a TEFL (English as a foreign language) course and then apply for a place there.

www.tefl.com

Or try for somewhere in Europe, in Poland, Czech Rep., RUssia and Croatia they are looking for teachers and also you can pick up extra work on the side. As for saudi, it's tough to get in, almost as tough as getting out (but that was my mistake :)
