Job prospects for school psychologists and programming/web development

Hi,

This is my first thread. My husband and I are planning to return to Ireland in the near future. We are wondering about our job prospects. I have a Ph.D. in school psychology and have experience conducting evaluations for special education, behavior evaluations, working with adults with disabilities and project management for educational grants. My husband has primarily worked in the construction industry but has also done freelance website development. He is interested in changing to IT work, specifically programming and/or web development. He has two years of formal college and quickly picks up new tech. skills.

We are both in our late 30's. Does anyone have advice on whether we are likely to get decent paying work and how easy/difficult it would be for my husband to change careers and how he might do this.

Thanks for any advice,

Gio

I'd guess that the challenge might be picking up stable, permanent, well-paid work. I'd guess that both of you will be able to pick up some work. He'll certainly be able to pick up call-centre tech support work, once he knows how to switch on a PC. I'd have thought that openings in school psychology are few & far between - Contact the Dept of Education to see how they go about recruiting for these posts.

NEPS is the independent Govt. agency which provides the Educational Psychology service to our schools both in the Primary and Post-Primary sector. They are no longer attached to the Dept. Of Education and Science but I am sure they have a website you can access.

I would suggest that your husband doesn't rule out construction work, at least until you get settled. He's far more likely to make €€€€s in construction (while it lasts) than he will in website design.

Thanks to all for your advice. I will check into the Dept. of Ed. for school psychology posts.

Thanks again,

Gio
